  21 THE C-KERMIT 7.0 AND 8.0 LICENSE

  25 This is the new C-Kermit 7.0 and 8.0 license.  The intention is to allow
  26 C-Kermit to be distributed with "free" operating systems such as GNU/Linux,
  27 FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, The Hurd, etc, even when the distributions
  28 themselves (such as Red Hat or Caldera) might be sold and/or might include
  29 applications that are not free, and yet still require a license to include
  30 C-Kermit in or with "non-free" products such as commercial OS's, commercial
  31 software packages, embedded systems, and hardware (other than general-purpose
  32 computers preloaded with "free" operating systems), since these licenses
  33 furnish a large portion of the Kermit Project's funding.

  35 There have been some questions about the provision in Clause (A) that:

  38     C-Kermit source code may not be changed without the consent of the
  39     Kermit Project, which will not be unreasonably withheld (this is
  40     simply a matter of keeping a consistent and supportable code base).

  42 The intention of this clause is primarily to make sure that anybody who
  43 makes modifications sends them back to us, since we are the ones have to
  44 support C-Kermit, and so we can carry them through to future releases (so
  45 you don't have to make the same changes again and again).

  47 Secondarily it is to protect Columbia University in the unlikely event of
  48 modifications made with deliberate intent to offend or cause damage.

  50 Any redistributor of C-Kermit under Clause (A) below should rest assured
  51 there is no intention of preventing them from constructing a distribution in
  52 the appropriate format (RPM or whatever) for their product or from issuing
  53 any patches required for their products; we simply want to be informed so we
  54 can maintain a consistent code base and a solid, supportable software
  55 package.  We are happy to work with any redistributor an any issues that
